Today I am delighted to be sharing this festive treat with you – The Amsterdam Affair by Kate Frost

My Review

What an absolute corker of a Christmas fairytale, set against the snowy backdrop of Amsterdam. You will love spending this Christmas with Iris as she embarks on a new adventure as she and partner Will relocate in the approach to Christmas.

A story rich in passion that takes you on a journey of rediscovery and self belief, I loved meeting Iris as she starts to find her feet in Amsterdam after abruptly leaving her job to join partner Will as he accepts a promotion. We get to see how Will likes to get his own way early on and how this impacts upon Iris after she has left everything behind to support him in his new job.

The title indicates an affair but you don’t expect it to be with actual Amsterdam itself as we watch Iris lose her heart to the snowy city. She is a wonderful example of how we can sometimes lose our way and how we have to be true to ourselves to achieve happiness, even if it means taking a different path to the one we originally had planned.

I loved the characters and the connection she forms with Bram, whilst I instantly disliked Will and his attitude I instantly loved Bram and the friendship he forms with Iris. The author creates a magical atmosphere that feels like a giant hug for the entirety of the book.

Book Blurb

A new start, a chance encounter, a Christmas to remember. Will Iris’s new year be happy ever after?

When Iris Greene’s boyfriend surprises her with a romantic dinner at their favourite restaurant, she’s expecting a proposal, not a move to another country.

But Amsterdam proves to be the change she never knew she needed, and a surprise encounter with a local actor leads Iris to new friends and the rediscovery of a long lost passion. While Iris thrives in a city filled with festivity, her boyfriend struggles, and her heart is torn in two.

As snow falls and secrets are revealed, Iris must decide her future. Will she be brave enough to start over and take a chance on love?

At a very poignant time of year, let’s step back in time with a review for The Return by Anita Frank

My Review

A superb story that will have you piecing the puzzle together from the start. As we meet Jack who stumbles across Gwen whilst trying to get away from his home town, you never anticipate the twists and turns this story will take as we jump between 1939 and 1945.

In 1945 we meet Gwen as she works to keep the family farm running as the end of the war approaches with the help of her land girl Nora whilst bringing up her little boy Tom.

As this story progresses we get to know how Gwen and Jack initially met and the events that occurred for both of them in 1939 in the lead up to war being announced.

A superb step back in time that kept me intrigued as I wanted to know how events had lead to the events that consequently took place.

Anita Frank has a wonderfully descriptive writing style, that makes her books thoroughly enjoyable.

Book Blurb

Jack Ellison’s war is over, but the battle for his family has just begun.

When Jack left for the war, he made a parting pledge to his pregnant bride, Gwen, that he would never return. It was, after all, best for everyone that he didn’t.

Now, as celebrations erupt for Victory in Europe, Gwen is terrified that Jack will renege on his promise, threatening the life she has built for herself and their son on the family farm.

But war has changed Jack, and he is coming home, determined to claim a place in Gwen’s life – and her heart.

As events of the past come back to haunt them, Jack and Gwen find themselves facing their greatest battle – and it is a fight neither of them can afford to lose.

In this sweeping historical story with huge heart, Anita Frank weaves a glorious tale of love and loss, secrets and promises.

Today I am sharing an extract from a new YA release – I am Winter by Denise Brown

Today I am delighted to be spreading a little love and sharing an extract from I am Winter by Denise Brown. We are currently awaiting a copy and will be sharing a review on completion as Daisy is looking forward to this one as she loves a murder mystery. The cover is gorgeous and catches your eye straight away and I can’t wait to find out more about Cee and how they go from sitting in the park in the prologue to Cee dying from a cardiac arrest.

Book Blurb

When Summer’s best friend Cee dies from cardiac arrest after both girls have taken pills, the accusations on social media begin, but as the bullying intensifies, Summer grows closer to revealing the secret both families are harbouring. A must read YA murder mystery.

Prologue

Cee was nine months older than me. We were in the same year at primary school—there were only twenty-three of us so our hands couldn’t help touching when we did the hokey-cokey— but we weren’t friends.

She was loud and embarrassing and bossy. If there was any performing to be done, Cee was at the front of the class with a hand up in the air, the words to ‘It’s a Hard-Knock Life’ already tumbling out of her mouth. At Christmas nativity in the village church, she played Mary or an angel or both. It didn’t matter to her so long as she was seen and heard. Sports Day she took part in everything. When parents were invited in to ‘Show and Tell’ or Mother’s Day tea parties, Cee invented an invisible family to make up for the lack of real family in attendance and gave them weird names like Archibald and Elizabetta and Geraldine, poured them tea in plastic cups, and kept up a steady stream of conversation about visiting her grandmother in London, where Great-Uncle Jimmy slipped and broke his neck one winter when the weather was Baltic.

She lived in a fantasy world and no one else was allowed in. Apart from her big brother Ritchie. Cee and Ritchie were like shoes and socks or Jedward, weird when they weren’t together or close to each other. I’d have been her friend sooner if it would’ve made Ritchie see past my ankle socks and pleated skirts and look at me the way he and his mates looked at my mum. I loved Ritchie more than I loved Harry Styles. He had brown skin and curly hair and there was something about the way he walked around with his hood always up that made me feel like the ground was trembling under my feet.

The summer I turned eleven, it seemed Cee lived outside on the walkway linking our houses, with Ritchie circling on his bike or huddled on the grass with his mates pretending they weren’t sharing a smoke or pictures of tits.

“That girl’s always outside,” Gran said whenever her leather trousers squeaked through the front door. “Her mother’s obviously got no time for her.”

I asked if could go out to play. My best friend was on holiday on an island, the name of which I’d forgotten as soon as she told me, and although she promised to bring me back a seashell or a dolphin to put in my ballerina box, her absence left my chest wide open and infected with a sense of abandonment.

“Course you can, sweetheart,” Gran said. “It’ll do you good to get out.”

Mum checked the mileage on her exercise bike odometer. Sweat dripped from the end of her nose and she brushed it with the back of her hand. Her legs kept moving.

I sat on the step outside our house and smiled at Cee. She came straight over.

“Do you want to go to the park?” she asked.

I shrugged. It was the first time I’d been anywhere without telling my mum, which meant that “Any Tom, Dick, or Harry could pounce on you and no one would know where to look”; that’s something Gran would say.

We walked. Cee talked. She told me Ritchie was going to move away, live with his dad in a shiny apartment in Glasgow. When he was settled, he’d come back and get her and she’d get a proper education, go to college, and become a policewoman.

“You can see me with a gun, can’t you?” she asked.

I didn’t know what to say because I thought her arms were too skinny to hold a gun, and her hair was so long it might get caught in the trigger and rip bald patches in her scalp, and then she’d look like she had alopecia which was Gran’s nightmare because her sister had it. So, I didn’t say anything.

My silence made her roll her eyes.
“Well, I’m not staying here.”
“What about your mum?”
“She’ll only miss me when the baby cries.”
We passed the woods. We kept right on going until we

reached the park at the bottom of the hill, sat on the very top of the climbing frame, our legs dangling and my heart rushing too fast with the fear of falling and breaking my neck and ending up with a wonky head. Cee told me she’d seen her mum having sex with a man.

“They were on the living room floor. She still had her shoes on, and her knees jiggled when his bum slapped on top of her and after, she had carpet burns on her back. She showed Sam and Sam called them battle scars.”

“Who’s Sam?” I asked. I didn’t really care who Sam was, I was just buying time, incubating the shared secret until it became a tangible thing, a rope binding us together. It didn’t occur to me she might have told this story to anyone else. This was our special moment, the spark that would ignite our friendship and from then on, we would be inseparable.

Or so I thought.
“Sam’s her mate. She’s a lesbian.”
To me, wobbling in the breeze, my knuckles white around the climbing frame, Cee was a warrior princess, fearless, strong, honest. My brain was humming with panic, sifting through the fragments of my life trying to choose one secret that might live up to Cee’s, one special moment that would seal the deal, unite us forever.

And of all the things I could’ve possibly mentioned, I told her about my bear-wolf. I blurted it out, confident in my newfound friendship and my closeness to the clouds. I told her about all the trinkets the creature kept safe for me, about the ball stuffed with beads from my mum’s necklace, and The Hunger Games book my friend gave me, and how one day I’d live in the woods and eat nuts and wild mushrooms—although I didn’t like mushrooms yet, but I would do when I was older. I’d never trusted anyone enough to tell before now. But there on the climbing frame, the backs of our legs metal-chilled, I believed Cee was the same as me. I believed I’d discovered a kindred spirit.

“You actually think you found a bear-wolf?” she asked. “What even is that?” Her eyebrows arched and I felt silly because I could’ve told her I’d seen my mum having sex too.

“It lives in the woods. I thought it was a dog, but she’s furry like a bear.”

Cee blinked slowly and I felt like I was losing her, my euphoria being replaced by twisting cramps in my stomach.

“She’s real,” I said.

Thunderclouds rolled in, purple grey, booming like elephants.

“My brother Ritchie loves storms,” she said jumping down onto bark chips, her hair flying behind her.

I climbed down the steps with the rusty paint, holding onto the rails like a child.

“Run!” she yelled, giggling as fat drops of rain dotted our clothes and our hair. We were drenched before we reached the main road; I could see her bra through her white T-shirt, and I wished I’d worn one of the white lacy bras Mum had bought me from Primark.

It was still chucking it down when I stopped at the door to our house and waited for Cee to say goodbye, but she kept on running till she reached her own front door where she fumbled for a key in her pocket and let herself in without glancing behind her.

That summer I didn’t go back to the park with Cee. The next day, on the walkway outside our houses, someone had drawn chalk pictures of a flat-haired stick-girl holding hands with a long-tailed bear.

My third and final review of the day is for an author whose books I always love to pick up – The Story of Our Secrets by Shari Low

My Review

I am a massive fan of Shari Low as her books always take me on an emotional journey and in the first few pages I knew this one would steal my heart.

We meet Colm straight away and know from this point on that this story won’t be straight forward and that there will be emotional highs and lows throughout as we learn about his relationship with Shauna and his gorgeous daughter Beth.

Set across a dual timeline 5 years apart we get to know Colm and then also what life was like for Shauna, Jess and Dan when we spend time with them in the future. I quickly learnt to love Dan and Shauna as they were easy going characters who are both trying to put one foot in front of the other. I took longer to warm to Lu and Jess as found them both to be prickly and they both take an emotional toll on Dan and Shauna.

This is a story that just keeps on giving as secrets come to light as they share their highs and lows in a bid to move on and I absolutely loved it.

Book Blurb

Colm O’Flynn was loved by his close circle of family and friends, however his death came too soon for everyone to make peace with their past.

Shauna, his second wife, adored him. But one night she broke their marriage vows, and didn’t get time to ask Colm’s forgiveness.

Jess was the first Mrs O’Flynn. Her heart is set on someone new, but will the last one night stand she shared with Colm come back to haunt her?

Colm’s best friend, Dan, is recently divorced. Can he take a second shot at happiness if it means betraying the one person who always had his back?

What no-one knows is that somewhere out there Colm left messages that could set them free to start over again.

Can divine intervention help them find Colm’s last wishes before it’s too late to love again?

Now for our second review of the day, we are sharing another festive read – A Bookshop Christmas by

My Review

Well as a massive lover of Christmas and a book addict this was the perfect book title for me to want to dive in. We meet Megan and her Mum straight away as we get to know a little about Megan’s past and want bought her back to York to help her Mum in the bookshop.

I loved the book club they ran and that it was focused around romantic fiction as that is one of my goto genres for when I need a lift. I found Megan a really likeable character and from the off you could feel her determination to try and keep moving forward despite her heartache. Xander was a character that I initially didn’t like and blew a little hot and cold for me although I did thaw towards him as Megan started to get to know him and peel back some of his protective layers.

A highly enjoyable book, with romance around every corner from the books they were reading to the characters that made the story. I loved their Christmas party theme and the enthusiasm captured for the book club by these lovely ladies.

Book Blurb

A Snowstorm. A stranger. A Spark. It should be the perfect start to the perfect love story.

But real life is far messier and more complicated than in the pages of the books in Megan Taylor’s family bookshop – the last few years have left this young widow in no doubt of that. Moving back home to York should have been a fresh start, but all it did was allow her to retreat from the world.

When prize-winning author Xander Stone rams his supermarket trolley into her ankles and then trashes her taste in books, Megan is abruptly awoken from her self-imposed hibernation. It’s time to start living again, and she’s going to start by putting this arrogant, superior – admittedly sexy – stranger in his place.

Just as she is beginning to enjoy life again, the worst happens and Megan begins to wonder if she should have stayed hidden away. Because it turns out that falling in love again is about more than just meeting under the mistletoe…

Kicking off the week with our first of three reviews today – Flora’s Travelling Christmas Shop by Rebecca Raisin

My Review

I have always loved books by Rebecca Raisin and this great book was no exception. It was well written and packed with great characters.  The book leads you into the story of the two best friends during their daily lives and this was totally relatable to me and my bestie especially with Christmas now just around the corner. Packed with lots of laughter and that made me chuckle out loud a few times and just cemented my love of the book.

We are introduced early on to a male character and as the insults fly, I found myself really buying into the characters and the antics caused me to laugh out loud and causing me to have to explain about what I was reading and why I was laughing. I love how there is the influence for Flora not to change and to stay true to herself and her beliefs as their two worlds collide.

This is what I would call a proper proper chick flick read, I loved it and just couldn’t put it down as I wanted to know where the plot twists would take me and what would happen as I neared the end of the story.  I love this author, her books are always a fabulous read and this one is right up there with the best of them.

Book Blurb

Tis the season for mulled wine, mince pies, and magic under the mistletoe…

Flora loves Christmas more than anything else in the world, so she’s gutted when her Scrooge-alike boss fires her from Deck the Halls Christmas emporium. But now she finally has a chance to follow her dreams – and what better place to start than the home of Christmas?

Before she can say ‘sleigh bells’, Flora’s on her way to Lapland in a campervan-cum-Christmas-shop. She can’t wait to spend her days drinking hot chocolate and taking reindeer-drawn carriage rides, but something Flora didn’t expect was meeting Connor, a Norse god of a man who makes her heart flutter and snowflakes swirl in her stomach. There’s just one problem: Connor hates Christmas.

Can Flora convince Connor of the joys of Christmas – and will she find a festive romance along the way?

Today is my turn to jump on the blog tour for A Letter from Pearl Harbor by Anna Stuart

My Review

After stumbling across Anna Stuart a couple of years ago, I am always excited to hear she is releasing a new book and this one appealed instantly as I have always had a fascination with all things in relation to World War ll.

We meet sisters Ashleigh & Robyn shortly before the death of their beloved Grandmother Ginny, who has left them a treasure hunt in order to learn more about her life during World War II when she was at Pearl Harbor in 1941. Robyn and Ashleigh both return to Honolulu after the funeral to complete the trail that has been left by Ginny.

I really enjoyed the dual timeline in this book and found it fascinating to find a story written from the perspective of an American who was at Pearl Harbor in December 1941 when they entered into the war as majority of the books I have read about World War II are set in wartime London. This story was fascinating with Ginny being both a pilot and an instructor which was unusual during this time and I loved how refreshing the attitude was to women working alongside men in these roles.

The lead characters are a total contrast to each other and this was apparent from the first few chapters, with Ginny being a vibrant character compared to her bristly Granddaughter Ashleigh who had suffered a major trauma 8 years previously and never moved past it.

Another superb story by Anna Stuart that was a book that kept me intrigued and keen to keep reading as we got to know both the sisters better and their beloved Grandmother.

Book Blurb

Ninety-eight-year-old Ginny McAllister’s last wish is for her granddaughter to complete a treasure hunt containing clues to her past. Clues that reveal her life as one of the first female pilots at Pearl Harbor, and a devastating World War Two secret.

1941, Pearl Harbor: On the morning of December 7th, Ginny is flying her little yellow plane above the sparkling seas when she spots an unknown aircraft closing in on her. She recognises the red symbol of the Japanese fighter planes almost too late. Somehow, she manages to land unscathed but the choices she is forced to make in the terrible hours that follow have tragic consequences…

2019, Pearl Harbor: Heartbroken RobynHarris is reeling from the death of the strong, determined grandmother who raised her. Her only comfort is a letter written in Ginny’s distinctive hand which details a treasure hunt, just like the ones she used to set for her as a little girl. Except this time, the clues are scattered across the beautiful island of Hawaii. Despite her grief, Robyn finds herself intrigued as she follows the trail of letters, revealing the truth about Ginny’s service during the Second World War.

But Robyn’s whole world is turned upside down when she’s faced with a shocking secret which has the power to change the course of her own life…

Inspired by true events, this is a heartbreaking and unforgettable WW2 novel about love, loss and bravery. Perfect for fans of The Alice Network, The Nightingale and Kathryn Hughes.

Meet the Author

Anna Stuart lives in Derbyshire with her campervan-mad husband, two hungry teenagers and a slightly loopy dog. She was hooked on books from the moment she first opened one in her cot so is thrilled to now have several of her own to her name. Having studied English literature at Cambridge university, she took an enjoyable temporary trip into the ‘real world’ as a factory planner, before returning to her first love and becoming an author. History has also always fascinated her. Living in an old house with a stone fireplace, she often wonders who sat around it before her and is intrigued by how actively the past is woven into the present, something she likes to explore in her novels. Anna loves the way that writing lets her ‘try on’ so many different lives, but her favourite part of the job is undoubtedly hearing from readers. I love a festive read and today I am sharing my review for Under the Mistletoe by Sue Moorcroft

My Review

Ever since I was lucky enough to meet Sue at a book signing a couple of years ago, I always jump at the chance to read her latest release and this one does not disappoint.

Set in the village of Middledip where everyone knows eachothers business, I loved this book from the first few pages when we first meet Laurel. Laurel has returned to the village she grew up in to help her sister and early on I loved the importance placed on both the relationship with her sister and overcoming trauma.

This is a story with lots of different scenarios playing out for many characters that have massive impacts on their lives and I loved spending time with them all and getting to know them as they found ways to move forward and old friendships were resurrected.

Another superb festive read that I love, I have my own teenage artistic daughter called Daisy and that added so much to the story for me and just made me love it even more.

I am already excited for the next release by this fab author as her books always hit the spot.

Book Blurb

Christmas. A time for family, friends – and rekindling old flames…

When Laurel returns to the village of Middledip, she’s looking for a quiet life. Adjusting to her recent divorce, she’s ready to spend some time getting back on her feet amidst the glorious snow-dusted countryside.

Yet, life in Middledip is far from straightforward. Coming to the aid of her sister, Rea, as she navigates her own troubles, Laurel barely has a moment to think about where her own life is going.

However, time stands still when she sees her old flame, Grady Cassidy – and it’s soon as if they’ve never been apart. But through her happiness, Laurel remembers why she left the village all those years ago, as she recalls a dark night and Grady’s once-wayward brother, Mac…

Can Laurel learn to forgive and forget? Or will her chances of Christmas under the mistletoe with Grady remain a dream?

An enchanting, festive read, perfect for fans of Sarah Morgan and Carole Matthews.

Today I am sharing my review for War Clouds Over Blackberry Farm by Rosie Clarke

My Review

I love war time historical fiction and loved that this was set between the country and London as we meet Tom & Lizzie. Within the first few pages I loved Tom and his family and the dislike for Ralph was instant and continued to grow as I read.

After a massive misunderstanding you see Lizzie embark on her dream job in London whilst Tom is left wrestling with whether he did the right thing. Once again this story was full of strong characters and true matriarchs in the mothers we get to spend time with.

I loved the references to Harper’s as I’ve loved reading that series and found that I flew through this book as war is declared and my attachment to the characters grew.

Another superb story by one of my favourite authors when it comes to historical fiction

Book Blurb

Cambridgeshire – March 1939

As the clouds of war begin to gather in Europe, the Talbot family of rural Blackberry Farm will be torn apart, just as so many families all over the world will be. Life will never be the same again.

Whilst in London, the Salmons family will feel the pain of parting and loss.

Brought together by war, the two families become intertwined and, as the outlook looks bleak, they must draw on each other’s strength to fight through the hard times.

Lizzie Johnson and Tom were sweethearts until a mistake caused a terrible rift. Lizzie takes herself off to London to heal the pain in a glamorous new job but she still loves Tom. His pride has been hurt – but deep down inside Tom still cares. Can they find happiness before their chance is gone and the whole word is swept into the terrible madness of war?

Today I am delighted to be joining the blog tour for Christmas by the Coast by Mandy Baggott

My Review

I have read a few books by Mandy Baggot over the past few years and now I just need to read her whole back catalogue as this book was brilliant. I made the fatal mistake of starting this late in the evening and saying I would just read a couple of chapters. This book had me hooked in the first chapter and it continued to keep my attention. I found myself on tenderhooks and then needed to know what came next and so I kept reading long after I should have gone to sleep. I loved getting to know the characters and each one has a slightly different storyline whilst all being linked to the same family.

I found that the story contained a selection of great characters including ones that I could relate to like Lester, Lester is lucky to have a great friend who always has his back and this creates a fantastic feel good storyline.

Harriet was a superb character who ups and leaves after losing her Grandmother so that she can comfort her Grandpa. She embarks on an emotional rollercoaster where she has to confront feelings from her past and also try to keep moving forward and deciding what she wants to do with her future.

A story rich in emotions including heartache, love and loss, I found that it made me smile and it gave me that warm fuzzy feeling as I continued to read and forged emotional connections to the characters. I absolutely loved this book and totally lost myself in the story line losing all track of time and what was going on around me.
