Today we are joining the blog tour for Can Dreams Come True (Book 1) The Cecily Taylor Series by Krysten Lindsay Hager.

Our Review

This was Daisy’s first read by Kristen Lindsay Hager and she loves a series so was keen to read and discuss with me.

She was lucky enough to receive a paperback copy and she loved how easy it was to read and the format of the book.

She enjoyed the style in which it was written and quickly wanted to keep reading about Cecily and to see how she handles being around Andrew who she has a major crush on.

She flew through it in just a few days and is keen to read the next one in the series and see what comes next for lead character Cecily.

When talking to Daisy I loved how she could compare this to real life and take away from it how relationships can be complicated. I am hoping that these YA reads will help her navigate her teenage years and this was a great example that she really enjoyed.

Book Blurb

Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?

Today I am joining the Bookstagram tour for Feasible Planet by Ken Kroes #feasibleplanet #lovebookstour @ken_kroes @lovebookstours

Today I am joining the bookstagram tour for Feasible Planet by Ken Kroes, a book highlighting concerns about the sustainability of our planet.

My Review

This is a book written around a number of talk points to help to make us more knowledgeable about sustainable living.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter about Getting Around as this covers the differences between Petrol v Hybrid v Electric cars. It discusses the the pros and cons of second hand cars compared to brand new cars and considerations to think about prior to purchase. It is informative and gives stats as well as explanations to help people grow in their understanding of how they can contribute to a sustainable lifestyle.

This is a book that educates people who have no idea what sustainable living involves whilst offering information to help increase knowledge to those who have an interest but are looking for further ideas through the subjects that it covers. I loved the style in which it was written as the format is clear and the language is designed to be understandable. I found the stays interesting as I was reading as it helped me with the perspective and turned it into just more than theory for some of the chapters.

A recommended read to help everyone acknowledge where they can make a difference and help create a more sustainable lifestyle.

Book Blurb

Are we doing enough?

Are you concerned about the state of our planet and hope that governments and corporations will find a sustainable way for us to live? If you do not think about it too hard, that may work, but will it? Left on their own, with drivers of popularity and profits, I am not too convinced that it will.

The missing part of this equation is you and me. Individuals who believe that corporations and governments can do better. Individuals who believe that through action, we can buy a bit more time to develop and implement solutions to our critical issues.

Did I hear a groan out there when you read the word ‘actions’? Do not worry! Most of the actions that I am referring to will not only help save the planet, but will benefit you right away through saving money, time, better health, and having a happier life in general.

Sustainability goes beyond controlling our consumption and pollution. There are key social, political, and economic areas that need to be addressed as well, and there are several steps that individuals can take to help in these areas.

For those of you who feel we could do more, this book is for you and is loaded with actionable activities, the reasons for doing them, and explores why we are not doing them already.

Every journey starts with a first step. Hopefully, this book will lead to those first sustainable steps and that will change the world.

Today I am joining the blog tour for Children of War by Ahmet Yorulmaz #ChildrenofWar #RandomThingsTours

Today I am joining the blog tour for Children of War which is a fiction story based on the Treaty of Lausanne. Translated from Turkish by Paula Darwish.

My Review

When I picked up this book I wasn’t sure what to expect, I was aware it had been translated from Turkish to English and had been drawn in by the blurb of a historical event I knew little about. The blurb indicates that although this a book of fiction it was written using a diary of a refugee family.

The story is powerful and I have learnt so much about what happened in Crete during this period. When reading this, it drives home the suffering families experienced during the early 1900’s and the importance of stories about these periods in our history to ensure it is never forgotten. Whilst reading Children of War we follow Hassanaki from childhood and see the trials and loss the Muslim Cretans faced as the power changes hands and they are faced with life changing decisions and the fear that become a constant in their lives.

Book Blurb

Hassanakis is a young Muslim boy of Turkish descent growing up on Crete during WWI. Fifteen generations of his family have lived on the island and until now he has never had any reason not to think he is a Cretan. But with the Great Powers tussling over the collapsing Ottoman Empire and the island’s Christians in rebellion, an outbreak of ethnic violence forces his family to flee to the Cretan city of Chania. He begins to lay down roots and his snappy dress earns him the nickname of Hassan ‘the mirror’. As WWI draws to a close and the Turkish War of Independence rages, he begins a heady romance with the elegant Hüsniye. There are rumours that the Cretan Muslims will be sent to Turkey but Hassanakis can’t believe he will be sent to a country whose language he barely knows and where he knows no-one.

Today I am sharing my review for the superb My Pear-Shaped Life by Carmel Harrington

Massive thanks to Charlotte at Harper Collins for my copy of My Pear-Shaped Life by Carmel Harrington which I have loved losing myself in this week!

My Review

Wow what a superb book this will leave you smiling and with your spirits soaring. I loved the film references and descriptions of their journey from Kansas to Las Vegas. As Greta rediscovered herself and got to know and love herself, I found myself thinking about things I’d potentially put in my cupboard over the years.

I loved the characters and storyline and read the first half in a sitting as I was so swept along and could really connect with Greta just moving for coffee refills.

Greta was a conflicted main character that faced many battles throughout this book,  the story tackles some big themes in body imaging and addiction. I loved the tiny details scattered throughout this book which all added to my ability to connect to Greta’s thoughts and feelings. We have all at some point felt like the girl we meet in this story and this will leave your spirit feeling cleansed and restored and knowing that your not alone.

A book I will definitely be recommending the research demonstrated throughout was evident which added to the relatability of the story.  I absolutely loved it, this is a book that will uplift your spirits and have everyone smiling by the end and biting back the happy tears.

Book Blurb

Meet Greta.

She’s funny.

She’s flawed.

She’s hiding so much behind her big smile she’s forgotten who she is.

But Greta is about to discover that the key to being happy is…being you.

Greta Gale has played the part of the funny fat one her entire life, hiding her insecurities behind a big smile. But size doesn’t matter when you can laugh at yourself, right?
Until Greta realises she’s the only one not laughing. And deep down, she’s not sure if she’ll ever laugh again.

But with her world feeling like it’s falling down around her, Greta is about to discover she’s stronger than she feels. And that sometimes the best moments in life come when it’s all gone a bit pear-shaped…
